It was “something noteworthy” when member Jim Carrillo reported on Tuesday that over 35 people took the Estate Planning 101 Workshop to learn about establishing a will or trust for themselves and their heirs. This is so important given that 68% of Americans do not have one. They learned that their church could be one of their “heirs” that receives a portion of their estate and that it can keep giving into perpetuity when put into an endowment fund or similar vehicle. This is what Russ and Sharon Aikins did with a portion of their estate; they gave to FUMC Plano in a way that their gift keeps on generating revenue for ministry long after their deaths. One could call this really long-term stewardship! If you have not considered your church as an heir, talk to your financial advisor; there may be tax advantages to be had as well.

It is also noteworthy that work is moving constructively toward the sale of some 14 acres of our property for about $4.5 million dollars. After a meeting last week with our Buyer and their engineers, we learned there are questions to be resolved and both parties are working diligently toward solutions. Consequently, we extended the contract period from 90 to 120 days (or July 5). Both parties would like to close the deal before that date, but this gives both parties the time necessary to resolve several questions and submit the documents required by the City of Plano before an approval can be issued. Like legacy giving, this sale is another part of our strategy to build long-term financial sustainability for our church.

As we continue to work on this, I ask you to do several things:

  • Pray for the continued progress on this land sale; it has been four years of work to date.

  • Look at the array of opportunities to engage in worship and ministry this summer and see where God is nudging you.

  • Make your financial giving electronic and recurring before you head off for vacation.  Our ministries continue seven days/week whether or not you are here.

  • Worship with us online when you are gone. I look forward to worshipping with you all from our cabin in Colorado as Mark Lucke preaches this Sunday!

  • Take good care of yourself and your family this summer; it is so important for your spiritual health, especially in this season.

Blessings on your Memorial Day weekend,
