Fleshing Out Our Faith
Rebecca Grogan, Guest Writer
At our last 1st Thursday Night Book Club, we reviewed a book we all liked but felt could have been “fleshed out” more. The language was flat and without passion. Aren’t we sometimes like that as Christians? We’re trying, sometimes absently; we believe, we strive to put our faith to work — but maybe we need a little more “fleshing out.”
Maybe it’s time to step out of our comfort zone. What would it take to move your comfort needle? If it’s missional work that needs more energy and involvement, talk to Stacy Spears or her mission co-chairs, Cassandra Bowell and Suzanne Babb. There are so many opportunities here at our church to explore!
Perhaps you need to experience a new way of thinking. Try a class, a book study, a Bible study, or even Book Club. These settings can inspire you to read and reflect in ways you might not on your own. You’d be surprised how many Christians shy away from diving into the Bible. Yet, that kind of study is invaluable for fleshing out our faith and widening our comfort zone for witness. Plus, the discussion and debate make it easier to develop your own faith statement. Everyone grows! Come talk to me — we’re currently studying the Gospels because a member asked for it.
Or maybe you’re gifted at witnessing your faith through interaction and service, and you’d like to work with children or youth. This area is always in need of strong, patient, and loving adults. Yes, they may test you, but what better way to stretch your comfort zone and flesh out your witness? Talk to Sarah Henson or Mardi Bowen to see how you can contribute.
I’ve only touched on a few obvious opportunities to grow in faith. Truthfully, it’s hard to get involved in our church and not grow! So here’s my challenge: invite a friend (or friends) to come to church with you. Flesh out your witness. You can even tell them this is part of your personal challenge — I bet they’ll help you succeed! Let’s put more flesh, more color, and more passion into our faith.
