It's an interesting experience to go far away on vacation only to return and find you can go virtually nowhere because you caught the coronavirus you thought you were fully protected against. It becomes more ironic when your wife has her first major surgery and you cannot be there because you are in “COVID Jail.”

These developments forced me to reassess my assumptions about how much control I really have and how dependent and thankful I am for others around me. I am humbled to thank:

  • new AV Coordinator Ephraim Nitanga for meeting me at the church at 10 p.m. Saturday night to record and edit a sermon I knew I could not preach 11 hours later;

  • Zoom, for enabling me to be present at meetings and counseling sessions daily while in quarantine;

  • my staff who are eagerly carrying on their roles in my absence and preparing for our Fall Kick-Off this Sunday;

  • my wife Cammy for bravely facing major rotator cuff surgery without availability from me;

  • the best mother-in-law ever who is nursing Cammy at her home for the time being (complete with homemade chicken soup) while I work from in quarantine;

  • our golden retriever Shasta who sympathizes with me here at the house and walks with me twice a day if I am on good behavior;

  • and all of you who have prayed, sent emails and text messages and been so encouraging. Your love and support are felt and so appreciated.

Covid is not to be trifled with, even when you are "fully" protected. Yet it also gives you the opportunity to thank God for our bodies, as well as the body of Christ helping us to take care of one another. Blessings!
