When my phone or computer gets so full of open tabs and files it simply stops working properly. When I call the IT helpdesk, the first thing the technician asks me is, “Did you restart your computer?”
Often, that is all it takes … but I have to take that step for the computer to reset itself.
There is a reason Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness. His head was full of a lot of open files, possibilities for his future and temptation that needed to be sorted out. The time in the desert allowed the Spirit to restart his focus and energies.
I am grateful for that same season for us. Longtime member and Council Chair Kevin Clanahan said the decision to sell a portion of our land presents FUMC Plano the opportunity to push a restart button – to reimagine not just what the campus can look like but more importantly what our witness and work in the mission field can look like. It stands to be a very exciting season in this church’s great history. But it begins on our knees.
This season and this communion Sunday present us again with that opportunity: to get on our knees at the prayer rail in this Lenten season — our wilderness time — and ask ourselves the question, “Lord, would you push the restart button in my heart, that I might work well for you and your purposes?” Your future and your church’s future will be well driven by that humility.
See you at the rail on Sunday,
